Emergency Garbage Disposal Repair in Rocky Hill, CT

A disposal that hums, leaks or has stopped can back up your whole kitchen sink. Our 24/7 line sends a licensed plumber to repair or replace it.

  • Jammed disposals
  • Humming and no spin
  • Leaks
  • Backed-up sinks
  • Replacement

If your disposal hums but nothing spins, or water is dripping from it, switch it off at the wall switch first, then unplug it or turn off its breaker. Never put your hand or any utensil into the disposal. Call us on the 24/7 line, and a licensed plumber can usually be booked the same day when schedules allow.

Most disposal calls end one of two ways: a quick reset that frees a jam, or a replacement because the unit is leaking or worn out. This page helps you tell which, and shows what is safe to try before the plumber arrives.

Safety first: power off before anything else

Never put fingers, hands or tools into a disposal, even if it seems off. Turn off the wall switch, then unplug the unit under the sink or switch off its breaker. Water and electricity share the same cabinet, so do not touch wiring if the area is wet or if you see sparks. If you feel a tingle or see smoke, leave the area and call 911.

What to do right now with a failed disposal

While you wait for the plumber

  1. Turn the disposal switch off, then unplug it or switch off its breaker.
  2. Stop running water into the sink if it is full or backing up.
  3. If water is leaking under the sink, put a bucket in place and close the two small valves under the sink, hot and cold.
  4. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a sink with a disposal. It splashes on whoever opens the unit later.
  5. Tell us the symptom: hum, no sound, leak, or sink backing up.

What the symptom usually means

The sound or the leak narrows the cause quickly. The plumber confirms it once power is off and the unit is accessible.

A leak from the body of the unit almost always means replacement. Seals inside the housing cannot be repaired in place.

Jammed or humming disposals

A hum with no spin means the motor is getting power but the grinding plate is stuck. Fibrous foods, bones, fruit pits, a bottle cap or a utensil are common causes. The motor will overheat and trip its reset button if you keep trying.

A plumber frees the plate from the underside with the power off, removes the object and tests the unit. If the motor was run hot for a long time it can fail afterward, so a freed unit that still sounds rough is a candidate for replacement.

Leaks: top, side or bottom

Where the water appears tells you whether to repair or replace. A drip at the sink flange is a gasket or putty failure and the unit can stay. A leak at the dishwasher hose or the drain elbow is a loose clamp or a worn gasket. Leaks from the body mean the housing is corroded or cracked.

Dishwasher drain lines often connect through the disposal, so a loose clamp can leak onto the cabinet floor each time the dishwasher runs. If you see moisture elsewhere under the sink, see our faucet and sink repair page for supply lines and shutoff valves.

When the sink is backed up, not just the disposal

A disposal can be fine while the drain line is clogged. Water that rises into the sink and the dishwasher after you run the unit usually points to a clog past the disposal, in the trap or in the wall line.

Grease coats the pipe wall and catches ground food over time. If the line backs up repeatedly, a cable machine or a jetter clears the wall. See drain cleaning for how those lines are cleared.

Repair or replace the disposal

Repair makes sense when

The unit is newer, the housing is dry, and the problem is a jam, a reset, a loose clamp or a failed gasket.

Replace makes sense when

The body leaks, the motor is dead, the unit is old and rusting, or the grinding parts are worn out.

No disposal yet

If the sink has none and you want one added, that is an installation job, not a repair. Ask us on the call.

Double sinks

A double sink can take a disposal on one bowl, with a tailpiece or trap change to join the two drains. Mention the sink layout when you call.

What not to put down a disposal

Disposals cut up soft scraps. They do not handle everything. Grease and oils cool and coat the line. Fibrous items like celery, corn husks and onion skins wind around the grinding parts. Coffee grounds pack the trap. Pasta and rice swell and cause slow drains.

Run cold water while the unit is on and for several seconds after. Cold water keeps grease solid so it moves out of the line. Hot water melts it, and it settles farther down the pipe.

What disposal repair costs

We give a clear price before work starts. These are the factors that decide the number.

What moves the price

  • Repair or replace: freeing a jam is a smaller job than removing and installing a new unit.
  • The size and quality of the replacement unit: motor power and features vary widely.
  • Electrical connection: a plug-in unit installs faster than one hardwired into the cabinet.
  • Plumbing changes: a new drain layout, dishwasher connection or a double sink adds parts and time.
  • Time of the call: nights, weekends and holidays are usually priced differently from a weekday visit.
Insurance note: many standard homeowners policies cover sudden and accidental water damage but not gradual leaks or the worn disposal itself. Policies vary, so read yours or ask your agent.

Kitchens in Rocky Hill condos and older homes

Rocky Hill has a large share of condos and apartments, about 39 percent of housing units in 2010, and a lot of homes built in the 1960s to 1980s. In older kitchens the disposal is often the original one, which means it may be at the end of its life when it first jams.

In a condo, a kitchen leak can drip to the unit below, so close the sink valves right away and tell your building manager.

Questions homeowners ask

Do you handle garbage disposal emergencies at night or on weekends in Rocky Hill?

Yes. The dispatch line answers 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. Tell us whether it hums, leaks or is backed up and we book the first plumber who can get to your address. After-hours visits are priced differently, and we give you the price before work starts.

My disposal hums but won't turn. What do I do?

Turn it off at the switch, then unplug it or switch off its breaker. Do not reach into it. A jammed plate is the usual cause. A plumber frees it from the underside with the power off and checks the motor for damage.

How do I know if I should replace the disposal?

Replace it if the body leaks, the motor is dead, or the unit is old and rusted. Repair makes sense for a jam, a reset or a loose connection. We tell you which applies and give a clear price before work starts.

Why does my sink back up when I run the disposal?

Usually the clog sits past the disposal in the trap or the wall line. Grease and food waste build up in the pipe. A plumber clears the line with a cable or jetter, and the disposal itself may be fine.

Can you add a disposal where there is none?

Yes. It needs a power connection and a change to the sink drain. Tell us about your sink layout on the call, and for double sinks we explain how the drain gets joined.

Do you serve Wethersfield, Newington and Cromwell?

Yes. We serve those towns from Rocky Hill, and the dispatcher confirms availability for your address when you call. See our Wethersfield page for how we cover the north side.
