Does Dish Soap Clear a Clogged Drain or Cause One?

Soap helps with grease on a slow drain. It does not dissolve hair, food or a packed blockage.

  • Hot water and soap
  • Safe steps
  • When to call

Dish soap can help a drain that is slow because of greasy film, especially when you pair it with hot tap water. It will not clear a solid clog, and it does not cause one by itself. The real trouble starts when liquid grease goes down the drain with the soap, cools and hardens further down the pipe.

If the sink is fully blocked or other drains are backing up, stop here and call (860) 397-8103. Our line is open 24/7, and a licensed plumber can clear it without chemicals.

What dish soap actually does to grease

Cooking fat is solid at room temperature. Poured down a drain warm, it spreads as a thin film on the pipe wall and then sets as the pipe cools. Water cannot lift it because fat and water do not mix.

Dish soap is a surfactant. One end of each soap molecule grabs fat and the other grabs water, so the fat breaks into tiny droplets that water can carry. That is why a greasy pan comes clean.

The effect lasts only while the water stays hot and keeps moving. Further down the line the water cools, the droplets can join up again and grease settles on the wall. Soap moves the problem. It does not remove it.

What soap, hot water and other fixes can do

Match the method to the type of clog. Several common home fixes work on one type and fail on the others.

If water has not moved after two honest tries, the next step is a tool, not more product.

Safe steps to try on a slow kitchen sink

01

Stop adding to it

Turn off the faucet and the dishwasher. Scoop out any standing water into a bucket so you can see how the sink behaves.

02

Run hot tap water first

Let the hottest tap water run for a minute to warm the line. Use tap water, not a kettle.

03

Add a squirt of dish soap

Put a tablespoon of dish soap in the drain, wait a few minutes, then flush with hot tap water for another minute or two.

04

Try the plunger

Plug the other basin or the overflow with a wet cloth. Plunge with firm, straight strokes until the water drops.

05

Clean the trap

Place a bucket under the curved pipe below the sink, loosen the slip nuts by hand and clear what is inside. Reassemble the joints snugly and run water to check for leaks.

06

Stop and call

If the sink still holds water, or if a second fixture is slow or gurgling, the clog is further down. Call a plumber.

Where soap-related problems really come from

Dish soap itself rarely causes a clog. The usual sources are grease, bar soap and what clings to it.

Bar soap and some body washes leave a waxy film. It builds up with hair on the pipe wall of tubs and showers, and a thick layer narrows the pipe over time. That is soap scum, and a drain cleaning visit removes it.

Too much soap in the wrong machine

Dish soap in a dishwasher or washing machine makes excess suds. Foam can push out of the machine, back up a standpipe and spill onto the floor. Use the detergent made for the machine.

Soap with a garbage disposal

Running soap and hot water after the disposal helps flush light residue. It does not make it safe to grind fat. If the disposal hums or leaks, our garbage disposal repair page explains what to expect.

Keep grease from reaching the drain

  • Let pan grease cool, then scrape it into a can or the trash.
  • Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing.
  • Use a drain strainer in kitchen and tub drains.
  • Skip coffee grounds, rice, pasta and eggshells in the disposal or drain.
  • Run hot tap water for a short time after washing greasy dishes.
  • Book a cleaning if a drain slows more than once a month.

Do not mix cleaners or use boiling water

Never combine drain cleaners, bleach, ammonia or vinegar mixtures in a drain. Some pairs release toxic gas. If a chemical cleaner is already sitting in a blocked drain, tell the plumber before they open the line, because it can splash.

Boiling water can crack porcelain and soften plastic traps and old joints. Hot tap water is enough for soap and grease.

What affects the price of clearing a greasy drain

A clear price comes before any work starts. These are the factors behind it, not a quote.

What moves the price

  • Which drain is blocked, a fixture trap or a branch or main line.
  • How far in the grease sits and how hard it has set.
  • Whether a cable machine is enough or the pipe needs hydro jetting.
  • Access, such as a cleanout versus removing a fixture.
  • The hour of the call. Nights, weekends and holidays are priced differently.
Insurance note: many standard homeowners policies cover sudden and accidental damage but not gradual buildup, and a grease clog is a maintenance issue. Policies vary, so read yours or ask your agent.

For a repeat grease clog, ask about hydro jetting when you call.

Grease and the Rocky Hill sewer

The Metropolitan District Commission provides sewer service in Rocky Hill, and sewer costs are part of the town tax levy, so there is no separate sewer bill. Grease that leaves your house joins a shared system. If your whole street backs up, call MDC as well as a plumber.

Many Rocky Hill homes date to the 1960s through the 1980s. Older kitchen lines have had decades to build up film. If a grease clog keeps returning, ask for a camera look before assuming soap or a new product will fix it.

Questions homeowners ask

Will dish soap and hot water unclog a drain?

It can clear a light grease film in a slow sink. It will not clear hair, food packed in the trap or a solid blockage. If water does not move after one or two tries, switch to a plunger or a tool.

Can dish soap cause a clog?

On its own, rarely. The trouble is the grease that rides down with it, which hardens when the water cools. Too much soap in a dishwasher or washer can also cause suds to back up.

Is it safe to pour boiling water down the drain?

Not usually. Boiling water can crack porcelain and soften plastic traps and old joints. Hot tap water is plenty for soap and grease.

Why does my kitchen drain keep getting slow?

Grease and food film coat the pipe wall, so the opening narrows and catches more each week. A cable or jetting pass cleans the wall. If it returns in weeks, a camera can show whether the pipe is rough or damaged.

Is dish soap in a garbage disposal OK?

A little with hot water after use helps flush residue. It does not make grease safe to grind. Scrape fat into the trash and run cold water while the disposal works.

Should I call MDC or a plumber for a clogged drain in Rocky Hill?

If one fixture is slow, the clog is in your plumbing, so call a plumber. If several drains back up and neighbors have problems too, the public sewer may be involved. MDC provides sewer service in Rocky Hill.
